Ry Cooder es un guitarrista y musicólogo estadounidense conocido a lo largo de su carrera por explorar y documentar tradiciones musicales de todo el mundo — hawaiana, de África Occidental, tex-mex y otras. Había trabajado anteriormente con músicos cubanos y en 1996 viajó a La Habana con la intención de documentar las tradiciones del son cubano.
Lo que encontró fue un grupo de músicos veteranos — Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo, Rubén González, Omara Portuondo y otros — que eran artistas extraordinarios en gran medida olvidados en Cuba y desconocidos en el exterior.
